Indiana County could see a substantial windfall thanks to the signing of the American Rescue Plan by President Joe Biden on Thursday.
As part of the nearly $2 trillion in stimulus money that will be distributed by the federal Government, Pennsylvania will receive $13.7 billion, which includes funding for county government. The National Association of Counties says that Indiana County could receive out of that $16,305,411 million, but that number is not set in stone, according to County Commissioner Mike Keith. Keith also said that he would like to see the county’s share go towards the expansion of broadband service in the county.
Keith said that the county would have a lot of time to consider how to spend the money. County Commissioner Sherene Hess wants to get the money to the street as soon as possible so it can help businesses and non-profits.
Commissioner Robin Gorman said that she would also like to see the money go towards the county’s broadband initiative, but she also would like to see it help several other groups.
The funds will be distributed by the U.S. Department of the Treasury, and local municipalities will also see stimulus money from the American Rescue Plan.
