Two election-watching organizations have released early reports on next year’s race to replace Tom Wolf as Pennsylvania’s governor, and former State House Majority Leader Dave Reed is among the names listed as Republican contenders. Reed, who now works for First Commonwealth Bank, has not announced any plans to run for office.
Cookpolitical.com lists the names of ten potential contenders for the Republican nomination for governor, Reed among them. Others on the GOP list are State Senators Camera Barlotta and Jake Corman, former Lieutenant Governor Jim Cawley, former Lieutenant Governor nominee Jeff Bartos, Congressman Mike Kelly, former Speaker of the House Mike Turzai, former Lackawanna County Commissioner Laureen Cummings, and former Senator Scott Wagner, who was trounced by Wolf in the 2018 election. Montgomery County Commissioner Joe Gale is the only announced candidate so far.
The Web site lists three potential candidates for the Democrats: State Attorney General Josh Shapiro, former State Treasurer Joe Torsella, and Philadelphia Mayor Jim Kenney.
Cookpolitical.com rates the state’s gubernatorial race a toss-up right now. The other elections ratings service, insideelections.com, does not list individual contenders, but rates the race as “battleground”.
