Pope Francis has named a new bishop for the Catholic Diocese of Greensburg.
According to a news release from the diocese, The Reverend Monsignor Larry J. Kulick will serve as the new bishop for the diocese that serves 78 parishes in Indiana, Westmoreland, Fayette and Armstrong counties.
Prior to his appointment as bishop-elect, Kulick was the diocesan administrator, leading the parish after his predecessor, Bishop Edward Malesic, was installed as the Bishop of the Cleveland Diocese in September. Before that, he was the pastor of the St. James Parish in New Alexandria.
Kulick is a canon lawyer and recognized as a strategic and energetic administrator with a “roll up the sleeves and get to work” attitude. As part of his work as diocesan administrator, he helped create 110 new ministries, including homebound phone and mail outreach, volunteer cooks who packed and served free takeout meals, and the provision of clothing and food drives. In November, Kulick announced that in addition to the in-person masses for Christmas throughout the diocese, there will also be streaming and televised Christmas masses for those who cannot gather.
Kulick is a native of Leechburg, and a graduate of Saint Vincent College in 1988 with a bachelor’s in Philosophy and would later attend Saint Vincent Seminary and received his master’s in systematic theology in 1991 and a master of divinity degree in 1992. He was ordained in May of 1992.
Kulick would serve as a deacon in the St. Thomas More University parish in 1991 and 1992, and was pastor of the Church of the Good Shepherd in Kent from 1997 to 2002. In 2012, he would earn his licentiate in cannon law from the Catholic University of America.
A news conference for Kulick was streamed on the Diocese’s Facebook page earlier today. Diocese Communications Director Jennifer Miele talked about Kulick’s work ethic.
Kulick said he was humbled and honored to be called to serve as the bishop of the diocese that he has called home all his life.
His ordination is set for February 11, 2021.
