Pennsylvania State Police responded Thursday morning to a tip regarding cruelty to animals at a residence in East Wheatfield Township. The tip came from the Westmoreland County Humane Society regarding the neglect of seven dogs at the residence.
The Indiana Patrol Unit arrived at a mobile home at 1252 Route 711 Highway at approximately 10:55 a.m. Troopers said the front door had been padlocked shut from the outside, the rear door had been nailed shut, windows were open, and a strong, foul odor was detected at the home. Troopers attempted to contact the homeowners but received no response from within the home.
The Trooper forced entry into the mobile home and they found seven dogs and one bird inside. The dogs, all pugs, and the bird were alive and in reasonable health. No deceased animals were found inside the residence, but Troopers did find “extremely unsanitary conditions,” including dog feces scattered throughout the mobile home.
With no homeowner to be found, Troopers requested assistance from the Indiana County Humane Society. The Indiana County Humane Officer then responded to the scene and took custody of all eight animals.
This investigation continues as troopers are attempting to locate and interview the homeowner/pet owner.
