Brenda Carol (Conley) Humphreys, 78, known to those who loved her as “Carol,” “Mom,” “Grandma,” and “Sister Humphreys,” returned to her Father in Heaven on March 12, 2020.
Born on March 11, 1942, on Buck’s Branch in Martin, Floyd County, Kentucky, Carol was the oldest child of Grover B. Conley and Edna Louise Ramey.
As a teen, “Capricious Carol” was a hard-working and popular student. She served as sophomore attendant on the Homecoming Court, was inducted into the National Honor Society, and graduated from Jackson High School in Jackson, Ohio at the age of 17. Following graduation, she studied English and German at Ohio University and completed her Bachelor of Arts in 1963. On June 14, 1964, she married her high school classmate, Jan G. Humphreys. They were later sealed for eternity in the Salt Lake Temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on June 15, 1970. Carol taught high school in both Ohio and Virginia and pursued graduate studies at Virginia Tech and Indiana University of Pennsylvania.
Over the years Carol served in a number of positions at the branch and district levels for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. These included, among others: district Primary president, branch Relief Society president, branch Primary president, branch Young Women president, branch historian, Gospel Doctrine teacher, and choir director. She was also a faithful visiting teacher for over 40 years. Carol appreciated music and taught herself to play both piano and organ using a home study course, often playing for church services. She loved to sing and did so often with her family, in the church choir, and as a Sweet Adeline in the early 1970s. In her free-time she enjoyed working crossword puzzles and practicing German.
Carol’s life focused on keeping the two greatest commandments and her greatest legacy is her example. She had a perfect brightness of hope and a love of God and all men. She served others selflessly and tirelessly for as long as she was able and truly endured to the end.
Carol is survived by her husband of 55 years, Jan; children, Kelli Melocik (Otto Benson), Elizabeth (Ben) Johnston, Heather, Geoffrey, Gregory (Emily), Jennifer, Brian (Kaelyn), and Kyle (Courtney); sisters, Deanna, Leona, and Gail; and 13 grandchildren.
Preceding Carol in death were her parents and infant grandson, Graham Patrick Humphreys.
A viewing will be held at the John A. Lefdahl Funeral Home on Friday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. A funeral service will be conducted on Saturday at 11 a.m. in the Lefdahl Chapel with President Glen Ishoy presiding.
Interment in the Oakland Cemetery will follow.
